Sharps and Prescription Disposal

The Sharps Disposal is a program that residents can come to the health department and pick up a free 1 quart sharps container or a needle clipper to dispose of needles, syringes and lancets that are not being properly disposed.

In September of 2015, the health department in conjunction with Franciscan Alliance issued a community health survey to asses specific health needs within the community. Out of the responses, 98% of respondents indicated that Montgomery County is in need of a used syringe and prescription drug disposal program.

While needles are not properly disposed many people can come in contact with them and can potentially lead to an epidemic of blood-borne pathogens.

Our community needs a safe, effective, and efficient way for individuals to dispose of their used needles. The programs preventative measures can help to prevent a similar outbreak’s such as Scott County from happening in Montgomery County.

There will be two drop off sites, one located at the Montgomery County Health Department, to drop off your used sharps containers, and the other at the Crawfordsville Police Department where there will be a lock box sharp container available.

For prescriptions, there is a box located at the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and the Crawfordsville Police Department. You will have access to dispose of unwanted prescriptions safely at all times at these locations.
